Awareness & Advocacy

Disability Law Unit

Disability Law Unit is a unique service that was initiated in response to a felt need for awareness and advocacy to protect and uphold rights of persons with disabilities as guaranteed by law. The DLU regularly conducts awareness programs at various levels for all stakeholders from rights holders to duty bearers and has reached out to more than 50,000 stakeholders through its programs. It campaigns and advocates for implementation of laws relating to disability. At least 40-50 pro bono litigation and public interest litigations supported by the DLU, successfully redressed grievances and violations of rights of persons with disabilities on a range of issues. The DLU-NE has formed a network of over 70 disability-related and disabled people's organizations (DPO) from across the north eastern region to share information and engage in advocacy of disability issues. DLU team members are regularly invited to provide trainings and orientation on legal mandates to bureaucrats and civil service officials. DLU conducted a state wide Awareness Generation Program for the Social Welfare Department across all the districts of Assam from 2019 to 2021, and created a large collection of IEC materials relating to disability, including pamphlets, video films, radio spots and a dedicated mini website on rights related information https://rpwd.shishusarothi.org
